Public Weighbridges

WHERE CAN I FIND A LOCAL PUBLIC WEIGHBRIDGE?

Public weighbridges can be found all across the UK on main motorways, industrial sites and at local council depots.

Some are self service weighbridges, however most will be owned and operated by private businesses.

You should contact the weighbridge operator before going to check:

  • how much it costs to use
  • how to get there
  • their operating hours

Make sure to ask the operator what size vehicles are permitted to make sure you will fit on the weighbridge.

WHAT WILL IT COST TO WEIGH MY VEHICLE?

Some public weighbridges are free or can be self service. Most privatised weighbridges owned by businesses will charge between £5-£10 to weigh your vehicle such as car, caravan & heavy goods vehicles.

At our sister companies weighbridge Hadleigh Salvage & Recycling Ltd based in Southend on Sea they charge £5 to weigh a vehicle.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A WEIGHBRIDGE?

A weighbridge is mostly used to calculate the overall weight of a load. This can be for a train, caravan and trailer, hay bales and for waste management & disposal.

Many people often use public weighbridges before setting off on holiday with their caravan to ensure they are not over the legal weight limit for travel.

Furthermore, industrial companies use weighbridges to calculate waste coming in and out of the site, or to weigh goods.

HOW DOES A WEIGHBRIDGE CALCULATE WASTE?

The full load carried by the vehicle drives onto the bridge, ensuring the front & back wheels are securely on. The vehicle is then weighed. Next, the vehicle drives off the weighbridge and unloads it’s contents. Once unloaded, they then drive back onto the bridge and are weighed for a second time. Sum = (1st weight – 2nd weight = total weight of contents)
