Guide to Skip Hire

Hiring a skip is straightforward when you know which size to choose, where it can be placed and what waste it can contain.

This quick guide explains what to check before booking, including delivery access, skip permits, hire periods and restricted waste.

Skips can usually be delivered from the next working day, subject to local availability.

Deliveries and collections normally take place between 7am and 5pm.

If you need the skip ready for contractors arriving in the morning, consider arranging delivery for the previous working day.

Choosing the right size is also important.

Ordering a slightly larger skip will usually cost less than hiring a second skip if the first one is too small. Skips must only be filled level with the top and must not be overloaded.

Skip Hire Checklist

1. What do you need your skip for?

  • Knowing exactly what the skip is to be used for helps ensure you book the correct option.

2. Check our guide to skip sizes

  • Take a look at our size guide for clear explanations on skip capacities and dimension specifications.

3. Where is the skip going?

Before booking, check there is sufficient access to the site/property.  In particular:

  • Is there a minimum access width of 3 metres for the delivery vehicle?
  • Any obstructing walls?
  • Any low hanging wires/cables?
  • Any overhanging building parts? (e.g. Lights, Satellite dishes, eaves etc.)
  • Any obstructing trees/bushes?
  • Any drain/manhole covers where the skip will be placed? (e.g. on driveway)

4. Do you need a road permit?

  • If the skip is going on the road/public highway, you may require a skip permit.
  • For more information, you can also visit your local council website.

5. Important note about larger skips

  • Skips larger than 8 yards are generally not permitted on the public highway.

6. Skip hire Period

  • The standard skip hire period is usually 2 weeks, however longer periods can be arranged on request.
  • N.B. All orders are subject to dates, times, and availability and booking period.

7. Waste Types (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY)

Some waste types are not accepted by all suppliers, or may come at an additional cost, including:

  • Plasterboard
  • TVs/monitors
  • Mattresses
  • Turf
  • Rolls of carpet
  • Tarmac
  • Fridges/freezers

Additional Notes for Certain Waste Types

Building / Construction Wood Waste Pre-2007 Important changes governing the handling of demolition waste wood came into force on September 1st 2023.

  • The Environment Agency withdrew Regulatory Position Statement 250 (RPS250).
  • This means that potentially hazardous waste wood from buildings pre-2007 (listed below) can no longer be moved and processed as non-hazardous in England, unless it has undergone prior testing.

Ten items that are now considered potentially hazardous are:

  • Barge Boards
  • External Fascia
  • Soffit Boards
  • External Joinery
  • External Doors
  • Roof Timber
  • Tiling Cladding
  • Tiling Battens
  • Timber Frames
  • Timber Joists

Plasterboard

  • Please be aware that additional charges may apply.
  • Additional fees will depend on whether suppliers charge additionally for plasterboard.
  • Generally speaking, most suppliers will accept 10% bagged and placed on top in a mixed skip.

POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants)

Following a new regulatory position statement from the Environment Agency from January 1st 2023, items containing POP’s can no longer be sent to landfill.

  • They must be shredded and incinerated.
  • Some suppliers may not take these or will charge per item.
  • Website quotes may be inaccurate for skips containing POP’s, please contact a member of our team before booking, so we can offer you the best rate.
  • Examples of POP’s are upholstered items such as sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, kitchen / dining room chairs, cushions, stools, footstools, home/office chairs, futons, bean bags, floor/sofa cushions, and foam mattresses.

Monitors / TVs

  • Some suppliers may not take this type of waste or can charge additionally

Mattresses

  • Some suppliers may not take this type of waste or may charge additional fees.
  • A member of our team will be in touch to discuss costing if the supplier charges for mattresses.
  • You will not be charged for mattresses in the initial quotation.
  • Costs can vary from no additional charge per mattress to between £10-£80 plus VAT.

Plasterboard only skips

  • Website quotes can occasionally be inaccurate, as such, for all plasterboard skips please contact a member of the team before booking.

Carpets

  • The majority of suppliers will accept off-cuts of carpet, however if you have rolls of carpet to go into your skip you may be charged at an additional fee.
  • We will advise if there is to be an additional cost, as it varies across the UK.

Tarmac

  • Some suppliers do not accept this type of waste.
  • We will advise if there is an issue.

Turf

  • Some suppliers do not accept this type of waste, but most do.
  • We will advise if there is an issue.
