In today’s post I talk about Waste Management, Fly tipping, Skip Hire and the issues surrounding them.
We can all agree, problems with littering and fly tipping are on the rise as responsible waste management becomes more expensive and collections become less frequent.
The problem is nationwide, with fields, roadsides, rural neighbourhoods and cities alike being plagued by household and builders waste.
Fly tipping incidents increased by 20% from 2013 and 2014, with 852,000 incidents being dealt with by local authorities. An astonishing 1 billion pounds of tax payers money is spent annually on clearing up after those who choose not to dispose of their waste responsibly.
Examples of this can be seen almost anywhere, whether it’s an empty bottle thrown out of a car or several tonnes of builders waste emptied onto a field.
Just last week, a member of our team at FindaSkip spotted this eyesore on a public footpath in Southend on Sea. Someone has seemingly dumped a large amount of mixed waste onto the curb, creating a potentially hazardous situation and costing the council to remove it.
It seems that people are either unaware or indifferent to the repercussions they can face if caught illegally tipping their waste. Successful prosecution can lead to a fine of up to £50,000 and a 5 year prison sentence.
Another issue the nation seems to be facing is the irresponsible disposal of animal waste. There are more and more people who are picking up their dogs waste but then leaving the bags hanging in trees, throwing them in bushes or, as we see every day here at our waste transfer station, putting them in skips.
It is a common misconception that anything can be put into a skip. However most skip hire companies have strict policies against them being used for animal waste.
At our transfer station our yard workers sort through every skip by hand, separating the different materials so as much can be recycled as possible. This means that animal waste in the skips is very unpleasant for the workers as well as contaminating other recyclable materials which then need to be sent to landfill.
