Fly Tipping in Crawley

Crawley Borough Council have launched a new campaign aimed to reduce the number of incidents of fly tipping in Crawley.

In 2014 alone, over 1,800 reports of fly tipping were made to the council, which cost around 75,000 to remove.

The council are especially focusing on some of the most common areas for fly tipping in Crawley, including Bewbush, Broadfield, Furnace Green, Gossops Green, Pound Hill and Southgate.

Community wardens have been instructed to knock on doors to explain how waste can be disposed of legally and responsibly. Including:

Green Waste: You can visit www.wsussex.getcomposting.com for information about how to get a reduced price compost bin for your garden. You can also use the fortnightly green bin collection or take your green waste to the Household waste recycling site in Langley Green.

Bulky waste: contact the council for the collection of bulky items such as furniture and electrical goods for a small fee. You can also take them to the household waste recycling site. Remember, items in good condition can also be donated to community recycling centres for free.

Free Collections: Residents receiving certain benefits are eligible for the free collection of bulky items. Contact Crawley Borough Council to check whether you are eligible.

Skip Hire: Need to clear out a garage or having a kitchen or bathroom refurbishment? Skip hire is an easy way to dispose of large amounts of waste without having to travel back and forth from the tip or worry about if the removal service you are using will properly dispose of your items. Think about asking your neighbours if they have anything to dispose of and share the costs.

As well as informing residents on how to properly dispose of their waste, wardens have also begun to patrol the sites where fly tipping is known to be a common issue.

Anyone found to be fly tipping in Crawley can find themselves with an £80 fixed penalty for small items and up to a £50,000 fine and even a prison sentence for large amounts of waste.

Remember, if you are hiring someone to take your waste away you should always ask for their waste carriers licence to check that the waste will be disposed of properly.

If your waste is found to be illegally dumped and is traced back to you, even if you paid someone else to remove it, you can still be fined. This is because you still have duty of care to be sure where your waste will be going. If a company will not give you their license number do not use them.

Here at FindaSkip we understand the importance of only using responsible, reliable companies, and so ask all of our preferred suppliers for their license details before we will use their services.

You can also check licenses here or by calling 08708 506 506.

With councils becoming stricter than ever on fly tipping in Crawley, it’s even more important to be sure you dispose of your waste in a responsible way.
