Cigarette recycling in the UK

A tobacco company JTI is partnering with Terracycle and together they are funding a cigarette recycling program that will see the filters turned into plastic used to make shipping pallets, railroad ties and park benches.

A study in America found that cigarette waste accounted for 38% of all USA roadway litter.

Meanwhile in the UK 39% of smokers, equivalent to 3.6 million admitted to throwing a cigarette end down a drain within the past month.

The paper and tobacco also will be composted.

Last year alone they managed to recycle tens of millions of cigarette butts from more than 50 cities.

Since the widespread success Terracycle and JTI have introduced cigarette recycling in the UK and many other countries.

Types of waste they accept include:

• Cigarette Butts
• Cigarette Filters
• Cigar Butts
• Outer plastic pouches (Tobacco pouches)
• Inner foil packaging
• Rolling papers
• Ash

So don’t become a part of the problem, help the initiative to recycle by putting your cigarette butts in the bins provided.
