The easiest way to recycle your real Christmas tree is to put it out on the council green waste collection day. This way it is collected, taken back to a licensed waste transfer station, and sent for composting.
Some councils stop their household green waste collections over the Christmas period, as they are extra busy with recycling, black bag waste and food waste collections due to the festive period. If you are prepared to wait (it is normally resumed from the second week in January). Most councils put on extra Christmas tree collections from this time to ensure as many as possible are composted.
If your local council stops household green waste collections over the festive season, you can still take your Christmas tree to your local CA site for recycling (Civic Amenity also known as the tip). Once it is dropped off there, it will follow the same process, the green waste bin will be collected, tipped at a local waste transfer station and then be reloaded in a bulker and transferred to a compost facility. One point to consider some CA sites now require you to pre-book an appointment slot for disposing of your waste.
To check if you need to book a waste drop off slot at your local council you can first check which council you come under here Once you have establsihed which council is nearest to you, you can click the link through to recycling and it will give you all the infomration you need, such as what wastes are accepted and if you need to book a slot.
The answer is yes, you can put a real tree or a plastic tree in a skip, and it will be recycled. Real trees will be recycled as above and sent for composting and plastic trees can actually be predominantly metal (under the plastic) and will be recycled as scrap metal. All plastic trees that have no metal can be recycled with other rigid hard plastics.
Christmas trees, real, plastic or metal, can be put into a skip with other general waste and still be recycled as mentioned. To check out your skip size requirement, you can view our size guide here. One way to recycle your real Christmas tree is to put it in your garden and make a bug hotel, this is a fantastic way to give back to the environment. There are lots of websites that show you how to do this. You can chop the trunk into pieces, stack them and drill holes in it, to make the perfect habitat for bugs.
Real trees can also be mulched and put in your compost bin.
