Residents and council members are looking for two men who were seen brazenly fly tipping in Croydon. Over 2 tonnes of building waste was dumped on Lysander Road on the Imperial Way trading estate on the 21st of January.
The pair were seen to tip the waste, including windows, wood and other types of building materials out of their Ford Transit Van before making their exit on foot after they were spotted by local workers.
The van has subsequently been claimed by Croydon Council and is to be crushed once the investigation is closed.
The incident is being taken very seriously by the council, and environmental enforcement officers have been interviewing witnesses and checking the CCTV footage of the area.
Unfortunately this is not a solitary case of fly tipping in Croydon. The council plan to crack down on fly tippers and prosecute anyone responsible.
There are plans to enforce patrols of keys areas of fly tipping in Croydon, and CCTV is to be installed in areas where fly tipping is a problem.
Anyone successfully prosecuted can find themselves with a fine of up to £50,000 and a prison sentence of up to 5 years.
What many people don’t know is that you can be prosecuted even if it was not you that tipped the waste. For example if you hired a skip or van service without asking for the companies Waste Carriers License and without taking reasonable measures to ensure that your waste will be disposed of legally and responsibly and then your waste is traced back to you, you can end up having to pay hefty fines.
There are a few ways to ensure your waste will be disposed of correctly. These include:
Asking for a Waste Carriers Licence:
This means that the company are licenced to transport your waste. All reputable waste management companies will have one. Do not use a company that refuse to tell you their licence number, you can also check that the licence given is genuine here.
Ask questions:
Reputable, responsible companies will not object to answering reasonable questions about how your waste will be disposed of. If a company refuses or avoids answering your questions they may need to be treated with suspicion.
Do not accept offers to remove waste for free or suspiciously low amounts:
Although you may be tempted to do so, there are many people who will take your waste away, remove anything they can sell (e.g. scrap metal) and dump the rest. You will end up paying much more if your waste is traced back to you than if you used a responsible company.
Take vehicle registration details:
By taking company details and registration numbers you likely to discourage the company from dumping the waste irresponsibly. You also then have details of the company if your waste is fly tipped.
Ask for an invoice/receipt:
This is a must. You may need to show proof of who removed the waste.
