I consider myself to be an expert in the skip hire and waste industry. I have been in the industry since 2004, and I am here to answer your questions on where you can place a skip. Over the years I have been asked many questions relating to where one can put a skip? The most common skip placement questions are listed below, this article should help you with any queries or concerns you might have.

Generally speaking, a driveway entrance needs to be at least 10.5 feet wide (3.204 meters) This generally allows an 18 tonne skip lorry to safely deliver to the driveway. Smaller lorries (14 tonnes and 7.5 tonne) can deliver to smaller entrances, but be mindful of the skip size you order and the contents you want to place in the skip. For instance, if you have a 6 yard or 8 yard delivered by a smaller lorry, you would not be able to fill them with heavy materials such as soil and or hardcore as the smaller lorries could not pick up these skip sizes due to the weight and the lifting capacity. Many other factors need to be considered such as narrow/unsuitable roads, overhead power / telephone lines, manhole covers, protruding house features such as satellite dishes, guttering, lighting and overhangs. Overhanging trees and hidden masonry within bushes can also be an issue not often considered. All of these may restrict you from putting a skip in the exact location you want.
Yes you can place a skip on a steep driveway. As a general rule if you can park a car on a steep driveway a skip will also be fine. That said, be mindful of how far onto the drive the lorry will need to go. If it is very steep, the lorry will be restricted by it’s rear ‘Jack legs’
You can have a skip placed in the garden but you will need to consider some factors. If the skip is to be placed over a wall or fence, it would need to be no higher than approximately 3 to 4 feet high. Overhanging trees could be damaged. The grass may become flattened and or die if the skip is left on the garden grass for some time. You may also end up with tyre track damage if the lorry is required to back onto the grass, particularly during wet conditions.
A skip can be placed in a private car park and you can also have a skip delivered in a car park that is council owned if you have gained the correct permission. This is usually in the form of a council skip highways permit which can be arranged by the skip hire supplier.
You can have a skip placed in the back garden as long as access can be gained, for example, is there a back driveway? Are there rear gates or do you have fence panels that can be removed to enable access to the back garden?
Generally speaking, and as previously touched on, a skip can be placed over a wall as long as it is no higher than 3ft. Some skip suppliers will not place a skip over a wall, regardless of how low the wall is. It is always best to discuss this with your chosen supplier prior to hire. It also helps to send the skip supplier a picture to enable them to make an informed decision, thus avoiding any wasted journey fees.
A skip can be placed over a fence, assuming it is no higher than 3 feet. It can also be advantageous to remove fence panels to reduce the obstruction. With this in mind, the distance and position between the remaining posts could be an issue for the arms of the lorry. Smaller and more ornamental fences such as Picket and Chain style are not usually a problem as they are normally rather low. Remember, not all suppliers will share the same opinions.
Many suppliers will not place a skip underneath/through a Lychgate. Those that do will generally not allow a heavy load or large skip. The procedure of lowering the lorry arms and maneuvering with the skip suspended in the air will reduce it’s lifting capacity upon collection.
